Part 1 Bonus Content

Chapter 1: The Harvard Club of Boston still feels like “an exclusive sanctuary secluded from the bustle of the city of Boston.” However, there have been two women presidents of the club since I wrote my book, and the walls are adorned with modern portraits of both men and women. I still enjoy the occasions when dining events in Harvard Hall are accompanied by live musicians.

Chapter 2: My undergraduate research at Penn State University was featured in a commercial during the Fiesta Bowl, but the video projected a later graduation date for me than I needed. Good to have a little buffer zone, agree? My graduate research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute described in this chapter was in my first laboratory rotation as a graduate student. In those days, a graduate student might rotate through three labs before choosing one for thesis research. As the book describes, I stayed in my second lab rotation for my thesis research.

The Beloit College mindset list mentioned at the beginning of the chapter now is simply called the mindset list. Some people consider the list nothing more than a compendium of trivia and generalizations. However the idea of considering the life experiences and cultural knowledge of incoming college freshmen remains fascinating and provides perspective for college professors as they prepare course materials.

Chapter 3: This chapter takes place in 1994.

Chapter 4: This chapter takes place in the mid-1990s.
